Inspiration {Main Bocher}

Over my very dear friend Sabrina’s birthday, I had the opportunity to spend a few delightful hours at the Chicago History Museum. Admitting that I've never been there feels like sacrilege, but it's the truth.  Of the many beautiful and interesting exhibits, one (very predictable) display caught my interest: the work and life of America’s first couturier, Main Boucher.

Sidebar: After typing that sentence, I find it imperative to note that I have never written the word “couturier” in my life, and generally do not give a hoot about "couture fashion".  Main Boucher, however, has proven to be an exception (forcing me to, yet again, face the anti-conformist hypocrisies that I sometimes am guilty of believing) .  Truly an artist of many media, what I found most striking about Boucher, were actually his drawings and paintings.  As a struggling, multi-faceted artist myself, I often feel the burden of focus-- how does one choose a favorite child, or give enough time to only one creative outlet? Seeing the variety of Boucher’s work was so encouraging, in reminding me that a successful creative is one that focuses on expression regardless of medium, and is at peace with fluidity.

On a more practical note, it was quite fun to see that some of Boucher’s beautiful gowns actually resemble ones that I have in the shop! It's a bittersweet realization, as I imagine many people swoon and idealize these museum dresses, but fail to see the value and identical quality of vintage specimens that they could purchase from any number of sources-- people are peculiar, but such is life.  I must say, one of my favorite details of the exhibit (that I didn't capture well in the photos) was the way the curators stylistically taped the feet of the manikins to symbolize shoes!  Very clever, indeed!

Something that I and both of the ladies I went with, mused over, was what amazing fun it would be to work on some of the exhibits we saw!  The artistry involved was undeniable. All in all, I definitely left the museum a bit starry eyed, brimming over with renewed enthusiasm for my own creative pursuits. Isn't it amazing how God can use such unassuming things to refresh our hearts?  Over and over, I hear him whispering freedom to me-- that that is his main desire for me, and for all people. That fear (whatever of) would not cripple or hold us back, because he can make good even out of failure-- so how can we justify fear of failure?  We cannot.  I cannot.  And so, all that we can do is to choose freedom. Freedom in our individual forms of expression, to use them from a place of joy and pure wholehearted-ness. Freedom to disregard what others might think of us, and to let things happen.

Sketchbook - 3

I had to search back an embarrassing number of posts to find my last artwork update-- I've apparently only done it twice! Quite the grounds for some catch up.

When I was a student in Mrs. Lorenz's quite bohemian 7th grade Language Arts class, I was accused for the first time of having a future in creating. A handful of classmates, one by one would comment on a note (you know, the passing kind) or birthday card I had made someone, and exclaim something like, "you are going to make wedding invitations one day!"

Nothing could have infuriated me more.

All I could associate with that vocation at the time, was sitting at a desk, and being behind the scenes when all I wanted was to be on the stage. As ridiculous as that sounds now (clearly a person can do both) I was determined to not make paper goods one day-- despite my twelve year old self's forty five different hued Gelly Roll pens, paper collection and penchant for lettering. Ha.

But here I am, finally about to do just that-- or to at least begin something my middle school peers would probably pull a "told ya so" over: Of Dust and Wonder Studio.

Because it's been awhile, we really need to go back a ways. I think my drawing re-boot started with my SIL's baby shower tea, which I designed these invites for (personal info has been removed).

Then, in a flurry came some fliers for a volunteer event, and printable table cards for a friend's housewarming.  After that, I kind of just got back into a rhythm, and started making cards for friend's birthdays, doing design work for a couple friend's blogs, portraits and stationary.

Since, I've designed some simple stationary that's already for sale in my Etsy shop, and have begun creating samples for custom, lighthearted portraits.

I've still got quite a ways to go (I'm bubbling over with ideas), but I'm hopeful that I'm finally put those middle school drawing/lettering skills of mine to use. ;)

Until the next Sketchbook post, which hopefully is soon!

Here, There and Ahead

Since it's been few and far between (much more accurate than "a long time"), an update here is badly needed.  So badly really, that I've struggled to put so much in one post.  Let's start with the present.  I just returned on Saturday afternoon from here:

Where I did plenty of this:

This with a dear friend, who made the long drive to Florida with me.

This trip continued in my head the theme that's been apparent in the past few months: ideas coming to fruition, action, realization.  I so struggle on a regular basis to keep all of my musings compartmentalized enough to see them through-- but I'm learning to just leap.

Lately I have found (more) order, and somehow have been able to occasionally get out of my own way. As a result, my creativity has flown in places-- define that word as you will, it's equally true either way.

Life has been awesome (literally causing of awe) in both both my highs and lows of late.  The feeling and gist of Philippians 4:12 has echoed in my heart repeatedly, with a deep sense of joy.  It's like an inside joke that I realize most people don't get: all is well, whatever happens-- I actually dwell secure in the hands of my maker, and that causes real freedom.

Among other things, in the next month or so I'll be opening a second Etsy shop for some of my artwork-- I'm not certain how much I'll represent my personal work there, but will have a few kinds of customizable paper goods available for purchase (portraits for couples and families, personalized invitations, etc.).  This is step one of...8 million, really.  I actually have a spreadsheet at this point for each area I feel vocationally called to, and action steps to begin moving in those directions (*pat on the back*).

Oh! That reminds me, update on shoemaking: my lovely shoemaker and friend Molly has decided that she just has too much work at the moment to effectively teach, and so my apprenticeship will come to an end with the completion of the pair of shoes I'm currently working on.  I am sad, but so glad for the learning opportunity while it lasted!  And seriously, with the spreadsheet I just mentioned, it's almost a relief to temporarily have the door closed on one column (there are 6)!

I think that's enough of an update for now. :) I hope your 2015 is looking bright!

Royal + Suede

I was so busy this past weekend that the start of this week has been slower than usual. I attended one of the baby shower's being thrown for my sister-in-law, went to a friend's housewarming/birthday party, my roommate's dance show, and another friend's musical.  It was a wonderful weekend, but when Sunday night came, I was done.  I have thankfully bounced back (I literally did nothing on Monday) and spend a lot of the day yesterday painting.

I recently designed the invitations for the baby shower/tea my Mom is throwing for my sister-in-law (since one apparently will not suffice), and I was thrilled with how they turned out!  Here's a (fuzzy) snippet of part of the invitation, I'd post the original, but don't want to bother editing out names and addresses.  Goodness, maybe I am still tired from the weekend.

After making and being so happy with the invitations, I've been really inspired to design more elements for paper goods!  Isn't it funny how action instills confidence?  Yesterday I completed a lily of the valley header to potentially use for stationary or another invite.  Only time will tell, but I'm trying to stick with it and see where it takes me!

Do it to it

These photos are from yesterday, which truly felt like Spring (I didn't wear tights at all)!  Amidst continual change, the past week has been interesting.  I'm right in the middle of a roommate turnover, which means abundant furniture moving (and blessed spring cleaning), I'm counting down the three months until I become and Aunt, and creative inspiration has hit me from all directions lately.  Now I've just got the do something with all of it before it drowns me.

Doing is something I'm actually horrible at.  That may be a bit harsher than reality, but I'm definitely more of an idea-builder than an ambitious doer.  It's really quite an oxymoron in my life because I'm pretty adventurous as far as actively doing, but making my ideas reality...that's where fear has a foothold.  I think this is because I see my creative work as a true and raw expression of myself.  Um, no pressure or anything.

And this is what I'm hearing from God in that: Keep your eyes straight ahead, kid.  One thing at a time, even sitting on this heap of ideas.

And so I will.

Busy Waiting

Do you ever feel like there are a million things happening at once, and at the same time the opposite?  That's my life of late.  I've actually had a good deal of work to occupy my time, both commissioned and personal.  I've been designing the header and logo for another blog, a wedding invitation, and I completed a (relatively simple) leather project that's totally opened my eyes to the possibilities there!  Now I just need to get the sewing machine in my apartment working! I've been pushing my comfort with my recent art work (I seem to do the best work on the fly, and with complete abandon)-- pictured above is just a tiny corner of a mixed media piece I've been experimenting with.  The gist is something like laying on your back and deciding what clouds look like. :)

This skirt has become my favorite and I've worn it a lot lately in case it's too heavy to wear in the summer months.  I love the way it looks with all warm hues, I did a post pairing it with lavender a bit ago and I love it equally with blush.

Back to my busy waiting.

Lately 3.3.14

Lately I have been favoring breakfast.

I've been sorting through old memories.

I've been learning (too gradually), I never thought I'd want homework but I do.

I've injected reminders of loved ones into daily life.

I've torn beautiful dresses and created things I never thought I would.

I've eaten very good pie.

And been awed and inspired by a little girl, her paper dresses and bold spirit.  Talk about God showing me the beauty and strength in softness.

More to come, that's always the good news. :)

Sketchbook - 2

I've quite neglected my idea of sharing my sketchbook now and then, but I truly need to!  I don't share it with many people so putting it here is a tiny step for me, though I know probably no one is actually reading this.

I think that may be what makes me feel safe in posting it. :)

Here are some things I'm working on:

A kind stranger.
Words that ought to be painted.
Scratch paper happy accidents, this one reminds me of a fan.
First draft of the second in my trio of favorite lumberjacks. This one has an ox.

In other news, I have started decorating for Christmas. :)

Floating

My recent reality feels a bit disjointed and frustrating and I know exactly why: I've had no structure of late.  I've learned in the past few years that some sort of framework (though not instinctual to me at all) is required for my haphazard creativity to ever become something outside of my brain.  What that's literally meant for me is that I've needed a structured, scheduled part-time job to pair with the madness that are my artistic pursuits.  Right now I'm in the market for such, but just haven't felt altogether gung-ho about any of the options.

A large theme in my current season of life has been floating, something I've become so good at the last few months, but am now struggling to maintain.  Laying on my back in still-seeming water, not swimming or fighting the current.  Just floating, confident in the direction the water will take me and reacting to events or changes only as they occur.  No pre-conceived notions or expectations, just experience.

Inspiration: A Touch of Autumn

Arriving home from my week away, I've realized a bit begrudgingly that my mind has started to drift towards Autumn. It's funny that only a few weeks ago a friend bubbled to me about Fall and how ready for it she was, and I couldn't agree. Usually Summer is a season I cling to, until the last fireflies are gone and the air chills. Even as the leaves begin to turn each year, I grasp at the neon sunsets and balmy breezes.

But today I tried sweater tights on just to see how they felt again. Weird.

These are some Autumnal things that have me anticipating the coming season lately:

This sweater pattern in every color.  Now if only I could knit more than just a scarf...

This girl's plum-ish locks.

Teagan White and her heart warming artwork (as usual).

The thought of a train journey with one of these.

Though I'll return to Summer for the moment, August already has me adding Fall-ish touches to what I wear and do.  I drank a hot latte this morning and wore my handmade leather booties. That reminds me of this post a couple years ago, mostly summer with a cozy autumnal touch.

Is Fall inspiring you yet?
